The Girl Who Sees Smells – Overall Review

Year: 2015
Korean Channel: SBS
Episodes: 16
Korean title: 냄새를 보는 소녀

Summary
Choi Eun-seol, later known as Oh Cho-rim (played by Shin Se Kyung), comes out of her coma after six months, however, she lost her memories and, at the same, gained a special ability to “see” smells as visible colours and shapes. Her left has turned green caused this.
Choi Mu-gak (played by Park Yoo Chun) lost her younger sister, whose name was also Choi Eun-seol (played by Kim So Hyun) to Barcode serial killer who killed her by mistake. Losing his only sister caused him to be traumatized and be clinically dead for ten days. Like Choi Eun-seol/Oh Cho-rim, it was a miracle that he woke up. However, he lost the sense of smell and taste and unable to feel pain. He left his job at aquarium to become a police officer so that he could become a detective to catch the killer.
Cho-rim helped Mu-gak by using her ability in solving cases. It was during another Barcode Murder case that, finally, Mu-gak was promoted to detective, thanks to Cho-rim and her special ability. Along the way, they help each other and develop feelings for each other.

Casts and their characters
TGWSS Ep2-2
Park Yoo Chun and Shin Se Kyung totally fit the comedic roles and show. To my surprise, they have great chemistry onscreen that makes me wish they were real couple. If you have seen Shin Se Kyung in other dramas, most of you would probably say that her acting is bad and all. I agree with that, I have seen her in one which is Fashion King and her expressions were all like the same.
TGWSS Ep1-2
However, in this drama, her acting definitely have improved and I realised that she is made for comedy rather than melodrama or serious type. Anyway, thank goodness that Se Kyung delivered Oh Cho-rim well. Oh Cho-rim is such character with a special ability which I would like to have too, hehehe. The ability to “see” smells, how cool would it be?
TGWSS Ep1-8
Mu-gak is such an expressionless person due to inability to feel anything at. It was funny how he drank a hot drink in one shot that make the people around him cringe. When it comes to performing skit with Cho-rim, it’s as if he flipped the switch to his comedic side which totally different from his usual self with serious face.
TGWSS Ep2-3 TGWSS Ep2-1
That’s Yoo Chun, ladies and gentlemen. Yoo Chun totally has done his job greatly of portraying his character with two sides to him. And the expressions, yes!
TGWSS Ep1-9 TGWSS Ep1-10
I like how they met in comedic way during the car chase. It is where Shin Se Kyung showcase her acting ability and also where I started to like her and her acting skills. That scene was hilarious!

TGWSS Ep6-1
This guy, I tell you… In the first few episodes, I thought he was innocent and all. He is Kwon Jae-hee, also known as Jay Kwon Ford (played by Namgoong Min).
TGWSS Ep1-7
Darn, we all thought it was Doctor Chun Baek-kyung (played by Song Jong Ho) who was the murderer. But I felt that it was too easy to have pointed out the killer from Barcode Murder Case for that we were in first few episodes. There were so many theories as to why the killer killed wrong Choi Eun-Seol, such as having partner. I also thought maybe Dr. Chun was the partner of the Barcode killer.
TGWSS Ep7-1 TGWSS Ep7-2
However, we were all wrong when we saw the shocking twist when Dr. Chun was not the one and being another one of the Barcode victims. It is also revealed that Jae-hee has prosopagnosia, the inability to recognise both familiar and unfamiliar faces. It is also when it explains so much. Since this show is about sense – Mu-gak losing ability to feel anything and Cho-rim’s ability to see smells – it makes sense that Jae-hee is also involved in sense thing.
TGWSS Ep6-3
Anyway, the actor has done well portraying his role being two-faced. Chef side and murderer side.

TGWSS Ep3-4
I thought Lieutenant Yeom Mi (played by Yoon Jin Seo) was the character to be hated, but it turned out that what she did is because she really wanted to catch the Barcode killer, like Mu-gak. Surprisingly, I liked her character. I liked her firm and strong character.
TGWSS Ep3-3
Oh yeahh, totally like this group of detectives, Detective Kang (played by Lee Won Jong), Detective Yeh (played by Choi Tae Joon) and Detective Ki (played by Jo Hee Bong). I totally love it, when the drama is ending at episode 16, they went to hunt Mu-gak and Cho-rim down because they needed their help due to Cho-rim’s special ability. HAHAH

The Squad
TGWSS Ep13-1
Oh yeah, best thing about this show is when the whole squad come together and work together!

The CG Effect/Visual Effect/Graphics
One of the thing I love about this drama is because of these! We, the viewers, are able to “see” the smells too! Gawd, the team behind making all these are really creative. The shapes and colours…
TGWSS Ep1-4 TGWSS Ep1-3
TGWSS Ep3-2
TGWSS Ep13-2 TGWSS Ep13-4
TGWSS Ep13-3

Conclusion
I want to read the webtoon but I can’t find it anywhere. Anyway, this drama is really great and I was so looking forward to it. Now that I have finished it, it somehow didn’t disappointed me. However, there are flaws and bit of disappointments. They never really explained why Jae-hee killed people and engraved the barcode into their wrists. Oh wait, it was explained that, though, from Lieutenant Yeom Mi about Jae-hee and his books when she was held hostage. However, they never talked about Jae-hee’s family. Did he really kill them like Lieutenant Yeom Mi said?

Overall, it held onto its rom-com genre, thanks to Shin Se Kyung and Park Yoo Chun. Their chemistry is really jjang, like Ji Sung’s and Hwang Jung Eum’s chemistry onscreen. I hope they will work together again!
